Bikes on Buses

Bicycles are permitted on all routes except Ski Service and Paratransit Service. All loading and unloading of bicycles can be done by the bicycle rider. UTA suggests that children's bicycles be loaded by an accompanying adult, but the rack can be easily loaded by young children. These steps should be followed when using the rack.

Loading Bikes

  1. Prepare your bike for loading. Remove water bottles, pumps and other loose items that could fall off while the bus is in motion.
  2. For your safety, make eye contact with the driver before stepping in front of the bus. You must load your bike from the curb or in front of the bus. Do not step into oncoming traffic to load your bike.
  3. Squeeze handle up to release latch, then fold down the bike rack. You only need to use one hand to unlatch and pull the bike rack down, so you can hold your bike with your other hand. It is not necessary to lean your bike against the bus.

  4. Lift your bike onto the bike rack, fitting wheels into labeled wheelslots. Each wheel slot is clearly labeled for the front wheel. (NOTE: The rack operates properly even if a bicycle is loaded in the wrong direction.) The purpose of the directional placement is to make the bike nearest the bus easier to unload.

  5. Raise the Support Arm up and over the front tire so that the hook rests at the highest point on the front wheel. The Support Arm adds lateral support for the loaded bicycle. Many bikes will sit in the wheel well without the use of the Support Arm, but the rack must not be used without the use of the Support Arm.

  6. Board the bus and enjoy the ride! When you board, take a "bike card" from the bus driver. This card serves two purposes; it reminds you to get your bike and it reminds the bus driver you'll be getting your bike when you exit. Choose a seat near the front of the bus to keep an eye on your bike. DON'T FORGET you have a bike with you when you get off at your stop. New riders often do!

Unloading Bikes

  1. Inform the bus driver that you will be unloading your bike as you approach your stop. Return the bike card. Use the front door to exit the bus. Unload your bike from in front of the bus or from the curb, not from the street side.
  2. Raise the Support Arm off the tire. The Support Arm automatically folds down to a secure position.

  3. Lift your bike out of the bike rack.
  4. Squeeze the handle and fold up the bike rack if there are no bikes on the rack and no one else is waiting to load a bike. The bike rack locks in place with a snap so you know that it is secure.
  5. Step away from the bus with your bike. Always step to the curb, for your own safety and to allow the bus to proceed onward.

Bikes on Trax

For your convenience, bicycle racks are located at each TRAX station. You must provide your own lock. Downtown stations have bicycle racks located in close proximity to the station. TRAX passengers are allowed to bring bicycles on board the train providing the following guidelines are followed:

  1. Bicycles must board through the front and rear doors only of each car in the train. No bicycles are allowed on the access ramp.
  2. Bicycles must not block doors or stairways to the train.
  3. Cyclist must stand with bicycle at all times.
  4. A maximum of two bicycles are allowed in the front and rear of each car.
  5. The bicycle must be free and clear of most dirt and grease.
  6. Cyclist must walk bicycle while on the station platform or when crossing the tracks.
  7. Cyclist must wait for the next train if the train is too full to allow the cyclist to board.
  8. No fuel-powered vehicles are allowed on trains.

Violations of any bicycle rule may result in a citation being issued by Transit Public Safety Officers.
